Israel y el Líbano acordaron extender tres semanas más el alto el fuego, este anunciado jueves el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, tras una reunión con representantes de ambos países en la Casa Blanca.
Con este anuncio, se prolonga la tregua declarada el pasado 16 de abril, que establecía un periodo inicial de diez días de cese de los ataques israelíes en el sur del Líbano, Mientras ambas partes buscan un acuerdo de paz definitivo.
Trump recibió este jueves en el Despacho Oval a los embajadores de Israel y del Líbano en Estados Unidos, Yechiel Leiter y Nada Hamadehpara avanzar en las negociaciones.
«¡La reunión fue un gran éxito! Estados Unidos colaborará con el Líbano para ayudar a protegerse de Hezbolá. El alto el fuego entre Israel y el Líbano se extenderá por tres semanas», anunció el líder estadounidense en la red Truth Social.
Trump agregó que desea recibir próximamente en la Casa Blanca al primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, y al presidente libanés, Joseph Aoun.
La de este jueves es la segunda ronda de contactos entre Israel y el Líbano tras la celebrada el 14 de abril en la sede del Departamento de Estado, en Washington, que supuso la primera reunión de alto nivel entre ambas naciones desde 1993 y concluyó con un acuerdo de alto el fuego de diez días.
Tras el inicio de la guerra contra Irán lanzada por Estados Unidos e Israel el 28 de febrero, el Ejército israelí comenzó el 2 de marzo una ofensiva en territorio libanés contra Hizbulá, que ha causado más de 2.300 muertos y un millón de desplazados.
En las conversaciones de paz no participa Hezbolá, aliado de Irán y autor de los ataques lanzados desde el Líbano sobre Israel.
El gobierno libanés ha rechazado que Irán negocie en su nombre en las conversaciones que mantiene con Estados Unidos en Pakistán y ha apostatado por mantener estas negociaciones directas con Israel, que Hezbolá rechaza.
